Hey, road warriors! It’s your trusty Jeep, Billy, back again with another story from the road. This time, we made a stop at Dubois, Wyoming, and more specifically, the Dubois KOA. This place holds a special place in my humans' hearts, and after spending time here, I totally understand why. So buckle up, because I’ve got a lot to tell you—including a fun fact that I bet you didn’t know about Dubois!
Dubois: Off the Beaten Path and Full of Charm
Dubois is one of those places that feels like a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. It’s about 80 miles from just about everything—Jackson, Riverton and Lander, and even famous spots like the Tetons and Yellowstone National Park. But being remote only adds to its charm. There’s something special about this wide-open Wyoming landscape that makes a Jeep like me feel right at home. It’s a place where the air is crisp, the views are spectacular, and peace and quiet come standard.
The cool thing is that despite being so remote, the Dubois KOA is right in the middle of town. That means my humans could park me and explore the town on foot. No need for me to take them around this time—though, you know I’m always ready to roll if needed!
The Wind River: Flowing Right Through
One of my favorite features of this KOA is that the Wind River flows right past it. There's something calming about listening to the river while parked under the Wyoming sky. My humans loved being so close to the water—it’s like having a natural soundtrack to your camping adventure. Plus, the river makes for some pretty cool scenery. You can sit by the water, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and really feel like you’re away from it all. For a Jeep like me, it’s the perfect place to park and recharge.
KOA Upgrades and Side-By-Sides
The Dubois KOA has seen some upgrades since my humans worked here years ago. For one thing, the bathrooms are now conveniently located right next to the tent sites. My human was beyond thrilled about that—no more long walks in the dark just to find the facilities! This might seem like a small thing, but trust me, it made their stay a whole lot easier.
Another upgrade? The KOA has side-by-sides you can rent to explore the trails around town. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m the ultimate adventure vehicle, but I gotta admit, those off-roaders look like a lot of fun. They’re perfect for the rugged trails that surround Dubois, and they add an extra layer of excitement for visitors. If I wasn’t so busy relaxing, I might’ve wanted to give one of those a spin myself!
Fun Fact: Dubois Was Almost Named... Never Sweat?
Now, here’s a fun fact that my humans learned while we were in town, and it’s a good one! Dubois wasn’t always supposed to be called Dubois. The original settlers wanted to name the town "Never Sweat" because of the area’s dry, warm weather. Pretty fitting, right? Well, the U.S. Postal Service didn’t think so. They refused to deliver mail to a place called "Never Sweat." So, the locals decided to name the town after the Postmaster General at the time, a guy named Dubois. But here’s the kicker—they made sure the name was written in all lowercase letters, just as a little jab at the post office. Talk about a clever way to stick it to the man!
Exploring Dubois: Small Town, Big Personality
Dubois is a small town, no doubt about it. You could probably walk the entire thing in about five minutes—maybe ten now that there are a few new businesses around. My humans loved being able to stroll around town, taking in the sights and seeing what had changed since their last visit.
One of their favorite stops was the military museum, which was built by a local man with a big vision. He wanted people to stop and appreciate Dubois instead of just passing through on their way to bigger destinations like the Tetons. And you know what? It worked. The museum is a real highlight, packed with history and a testament to Dubois’ unique charm.
Another favorite? Nana’s Bowling and Bakery. That’s right—this small town has a place where you can grab a fresh pastry and then bowl a few frames. My humans couldn’t resist grabbing some sweet treats (which they didn’t share with me, of course) and hitting the lanes. It’s the kind of quirky spot that adds to Dubois’ laid-back, friendly vibe.
A Jeep's Perspective on Dubois
From my vantage point, parked by the Wind River, I can see why Dubois holds such a special place in my humans’ hearts. The town may be small, but it’s packed with character. The KOA is a perfect home base, whether you’re here for the quiet atmosphere, the nearby trails, or just to relax by the river.
For my humans, this stop was all about revisiting old memories and making new ones. For me, it was a chance to rest up and take in the beauty of Wyoming. Between the upgrades at the KOA, the fun new businesses in town, and the peaceful surroundings, it’s no wonder they’re already talking about coming back.
So until our next adventure, I’ll keep rolling along. Stay tuned for more stories from the road, and as always, safe travels!
Cheers,
Billy the Jeep 🛻
